Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Nomad drifters, communications, batteries and operations.

How can you offer such competitive prices in comparison with other buoy manufacturers?

SouthTEK has benefited from lean manufacturing techniques from the automotive industry, allowing us to deliver high-end ocean instrumentation at a fraction of the typical cost.

What does transmission and position sampling mean?

Position sampling retrieves location data from GNSS systems and stores it in buoy memory. Transmission sends this data to the Internet via LD Manager for user access.

Operations can alternate sampling and transmission steps (e.g. hourly sampling with hourly transmission) or sample multiple positions before transmitting.

What are the minimum and maximum rates of transmission and position sampling?

Sampling and transmission rates range from 1 minute to 24 hours.

What is the difference between Offshore and Coastal Nomads?

Offshore Nomads use Iridium for global coverage, with higher communication costs.

Coastal Nomads use GPRS networks with two years of included communications, but operate only in coastal areas with mobile coverage.

How long does it take to recharge the batteries?

Between 6 and 24 hours, depending on the level of discharge.

What is the Search Mode?

Search Mode progressively increases position sampling frequency as vessels approach the buoys for recovery, balancing tracking precision with Iridium communication costs.

Where can I buy your products?

Contact our resellers in your country or email SouthTEK directly. Partnership opportunities are available for prospective resellers.

Do I need anything else, in addition to the buoy, to operate the Nomad Family?

Software is provided for free with the hardware, plus one recharger for the rechargeable batteries.

What are the costs of operating the buoys?

Coastal Nomads include two years of communications.

Offshore Nomads use customised Iridium plans tailored to individual customer needs.

What is LD Manager?

Free browser-based software for operating and configuring buoys. Features include adjusting sampling rates, activating search mode, viewing positions on Google Maps and downloading data.

Are the batteries of the buoys rechargeable?

Yes, as many times as you wish.

How many times can I reuse the buoys of the Nomad Family?

Buoys with high-quality Lithium Polymer batteries can be reused an innumerable number of times.

Can I add additional sensors to the buoy?

Barometric pressure and water temperature are standard additions. Contact SouthTEK for other sensor options.

Where can I use the Coastal Nomad? Where can I use the Offshore Nomad?

Coastal Nomads require GPRS coverage (shoreline to approximately 7 miles offshore).

Offshore Nomads operate anywhere on Earth.
